The AB4Rail team is pleased to announce the publication of the article entitled “Future technologies for train communication: the role of LEO HTS satellites in the Adaptable Communication System” with authors Romeo Giuliano (Università degli Studi “Guglielmo Marconi”), Alessandro Vizzarri (Radiolabs), and Franco Mazzenga (Radiolabs, University of Rome Tor Vergata).
The new High Throughput Satellite (HTS) Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellations promise very interesting performances in the future communication systems in the rail sectors. It can be integrated in the Adaptable Communication Systems (ACS) and Future Railway Mobile Communication Systems (FRMCS), replacing the obsolete GSM-R by 2030. The paper analyzes the LEO constellations of Starlink and OneWeb using public data in the Rome -Florence railway line, showing interesting performance in terms of visibility, service connectivity, and traffic capacities (up to 1 Gbps), thus enabling LEO technology to be adopted in the railway scenarios of the next years.
